The 51st Annual Running Of Poker’s Largest Tournament Series Is The Latest Poker Event Impacted By The Coronavirus Outbreak
On Monday, April 20 the World Series of Poker (WSOP) released a statement announcing that the 51st annual running of the biggest poker series has been pushed back due to the global COVID-19 outbreak. Organizers indicated that they are targeting a move to the fall of 2020 for the series, but no exact dates have been determined. The WSOP takes place at the RIO All-Suites Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
“We are committed to running the World Series of Poker this year but need additional time to proceed on our traditional scale while prioritizing guest and staff well-being,” said WSOP Executive Director Ty Stewart in the release. “In the interim, official WSOP competitions are expected to be played online this summer, and we will soon announce details of an expanded series of tournaments to be played on WSOP.com and through partnerships with international operators, which will allow players to chase WSOP glory from their homes.”
The announcement indicated that changes to the current schedule of events are likely. The finalized schedule announced in February had called for a record 101 gold bracelet bracelet to be played. The release from the WSOP did stipulate that the rescheduled WSOP will include the $10,000 buy-in no-limit hold’em main event, known as poker’s world championship.
