There are many changes that are taking place at the California Hotel & Casino (“The Cal”) in Downtown Las Vegas amidst this pandemic. The hotel in the past relied on 70% of the visitors to arrive from Hawaii. This is not happening.

Boyd Gaming (owner) had four scheduled 767 charter flights come to Las Vegas from Honolulu to fill rooms at the Fremont, California and Main Street Station each week. These were package deals with their subsidiary Vacations Hawaii. The flights will hopefully return by December 28.

The Cal recently put a fresh coat of very lively colored paint on the exterior of the property that features some new island-inspired murals. The casino and all hotel rooms and suites were remodeled in 2017. This was a fantastic remodel.

The 28 table casino pit has reduced hours Friday to Sunday 12pm to 4am and Monday to Thursday 2pm to 10pm. Live Keno that was 24/7 has been reduced to 7am to 10pm. The four craps table games have been moved up to the main casino floor.

Restaurant options are limited at this time. Market Street Cafe that was formally open 24/7 is now open Sunday to Thursday 5pm to 12am and Friday and Saturday 5pm to 1am. Aloha Specialties Restaurant is open 8am to 7pm daily. Redwood Steakhouse, California Noodle House and Lappert’s Ice Cream Shop remain closed.

The staff remain very friendly during these tough times. They retain their pure aloha spirit.

Fun Fact: Craps is very popular at the Cal. They have the “Golden Arm” for players that can shoot for over an hour without “crapping out”. They receive a plaque. In 1989, the hotel designated the term “Golden Arm”, after Stanley Fujitake rolled dice for three hours and six minutes without losing.
