Hiking / Urban Walking

There are many great places to go hiking in and around Las Vegas, including Red Rock Canyon, Lake Mead, Mt. Charleston and more. Here are a few:

  • Lost Creek Falls, Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area
  • Calico Tank, Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area
  • Ice Box Canyon, Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area
  • Calico Hills, Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area
  • Clark County Wetlands Park Nature Preserve
  • Lake Mead Railway Trail
  • Mount Charleston Hiking Trails

From Jason P. from Henderson, Nevada Trip advisor contributor (with his permission):

“Are you more interested in urban walks or nature walks? I have some suggestions for both:

Urban walks: the Downtown area along Fremont Street from the Plaza Casino Hotel to Container Park at 7th Street in the Fremont East neighborhood, then (after visiting Container Park, a hip shopping/dining complex then walking along Carson Street (parallel to but one block south of Fremont Street) back to Main Street at the Plaza Casino Hotel.

Aside from walking the Las Vegas Strip itself, you can walk east on Harmon Ave. from the Strip at the south end of the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino mall area to Paradise Road. You could also walk on Flamingo Road from the Strip (Las Vegas Blvd.) east to Maryland Parkway, perhaps stopping to visit the National Atomic Testing Museum on the south side of Flamingo Road between Paradise Road and Swenson Street. You can then continue your walk to Maryland Parkway and take the 202 RTC bus on Flamingo back to the Las Vegas Strip or walk back to the Strip.

Nature walks: Clark County Wetlands Park is an attractive natural area with many trails in the east end of the Las Vegas Valley area. You can take the 201A or 201B RTC bus on Tropicana Ave. to about the end of the line (ask the driver for the closes stop to Wetlands Park) and then walk about a mile to the park or use a rideshare company like Uber or Lyft to get there and back.

Sunset Park at the southeast corner of Sunset Road and Eastern Ave. near the airport has some attractive trails along the eastern and southern portions of the park. It’s in an urban area with planes flying overhead so you still feel like you’re in the city, unlike Wetlands Park, but it’s better served by public transit. From the South Strip Transfer Terminal take the 212 RTC bus EAST (the 212 bus going west also stops at the same spot so be sure to check with the driver that you’re on the right bus) and get off at Eastern Ave. or the next stop which is closer to the trail area. To get to the South Strip Transfer Terminal, take the Deuce RTC bus) SOUTH to the end of the line.

One of my favorite trails is one even many locals aren’t aware of: the Pittman Wash Trail in Henderson, Nevada.  If you’re using a rideshare service or driving, you can access it by parking at Silver Springs Recreation Center about a half mile east of Green Valley Parkway along Silver Springs Parkway and then walking south by the pool area to the trail. You can get there by public bus by taking the 212 RTC bus heading east from the South Strip Transfer Terminal (as mentioned earlier) and this time getting off at Pecos Road and at the same bus stop, taking the 111 RTC bus and getting off at Green Valley Parkway and Windmill Road.

What’s great about this trail is that not only is there a paved trail just above the wash, there are also winding trails inside the wash that are fun to walk on. You can google Pittman Wash Trail Henderson, Nevada for more information about this trail.”

Thank you, Jason P. for these great suggestions!
