California Hotel & Casino Photos, Tips and Details:
The California Hotel & Casino (The Cal) opened in 1975. The theme is Hawaiian and about 70% of the visitors are from the Aloha State of Hawaii. The entire casino and all 781 hotel rooms and suites were remodeled in 2017. The hotel has a small pool (open seasonally) and gym.
Tip: It is best to ask for a high floor, quiet room. The West Tower is near the Market Street Cafe and Redwood Steakhouse. The East Tower is near the Hotel Lobby and Keno Lounge.
The casino features both old and new slot machines. Some still take coins. The casino pit has 28 tables with all the popular games, including Blackjack, Craps, Roulette and more. The keno lounge is open 24/7. The California is owned by Boyd Gaming and their loyalty program is Boyd Rewards.
The California Hotel & Casino is located one block off Fremont Street and is connected with an indoor walkway to Main Street Station (sister property) from the second floor.
They have some very good dining options at all price points, including:
- Aloha Specialties (Hawaiian)
- California Noodle House (Asian)
- Lappert’s Ice Cream Shop (American)
- Market Street Cafe (American)
- Redwood Steakhouse (Steaks & Chops)
The Cal has two very popular bars. Holo Holo – The Happy Bar and the Cal Sports Lounge (with a Sports Book). Both are located on the first floor. The Cal generally caters to an older crowd and is Pure Aloha on the Ninth Island – Las Vegas!
Fun Fact: Craps is very popular at the Cal. They have the “Golden Arm” for players that can shoot for over an hour without “crapping out”. They receive a plaque. In 1989, the hotel designated the term “Golden Arm”, after Stanley Fujitake rolled dice for three hours and six minutes without losing.
Self Parking is free if you are a guest of the hotel, dine or gamble. Check with the Boyd Rewards players club booth for details. RTC Bus Routes: DEUCE and CX
