Golden Gate Hotel & Casino opened in 1906 and was called Hotel Nevada when it opened. It was the first hotel in Las Vegas. It was than renamed Sal Sagev (Las Vegas spelled backwards).
Tip: Be sure to check out the lobby area for some Las Vegas history with displays. The Golden Gate Hotel and Casino was known for the famous 99 cent Shrimp Cocktail. That is long gone.
In 1974 it was renamed Golden Gate, and it has a San Francisco theme, with 122 rooms and suites. They do not have a pool, but hotel guests can visit Stadium Swim at the Circa Resort & Casino (sister property).
Tip: The Golden Gate is located on the Fremont Street Experience and has some of the smallest hotel rooms in the entire city, unless you book a suite.
The hotel and casino is owned by Greg and Derek Stevens. They became full owners of the property in 2016. They did a expansion of the casino in 2017 when they purchased the La Bayou Casino next door.
They feature over 250 of the latest slot and video poker machines. In September 2025, they removed their casino pit with live dealers. This also brought the end of dancing dealers at this casino. They now have electronic Blackjack, Craps and Roulette. They also have Circa Sports betting kiosks and a High Limit Slot gaming room.
The Golden Gate uses the CLUB ONE loyalty card, which can also be used at The D Hotel & Casino and Circa Resort & Casino (sister properties).
Tip: There are no dining options in the casino since Du-par’s Coffee Shop closed.
Bar Prohibition is very popular, and a great place to watch sports. Outside they have One Bar with cocktails, beer and slush drinks. This property is as vintage Vegas as it gets – in a good way.
Fun Fact: This hotel received the first phone number in Las Vegas “1”.
